# Lifetime Memberships: What to Check Before You Pay

A one-time price is easy to compare. The access behind it is not. Separate the payment schedule, the included service, and the assumptions behind long-term value.

## The short answer

Evaluate a lifetime membership as an upfront purchase with a defined access scope, not as a promise that a service will exist forever. If the offer does not define the term, ask the provider before paying. This is a comparison framework, not an interpretation of a particular contract.

## One payment does not tell you how long access lasts

Keep three questions separate: when money is collected, when access ends, and what access includes. A prepaid year and a lifetime offer may both collect once, but they describe different durations. Likewise, a recurring plan may be cancelable while still providing access through an already-paid term. Record the actual wording rather than translating every nonrecurring offer into lifetime.

### Read the offer in three separate layers

| Layer | What to record | What not to assume |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Payment | Total due now, currency, taxes or fees, and separate add-ons | Every associated product is nonrecurring |
| Duration | The stated access term and termination conditions | Lifetime means a guaranteed number of years |
| Scope | Named library, future updates, downloads, devices and bonus access | Every present or future network product is included |

These are questions for evaluating an offer, not claims about every provider.

## Use break-even math without inventing an annual rate

For an illustration only, suppose equivalent access costs $240 once or $20 per month. Twelve monthly payments total $240. That is a simple payment break-even point, not proof that either option is better. It assumes unchanged monthly pricing, continuous use, identical access and no extra charges. None of those assumptions should be hidden in a savings claim.

### Illustration: $240 once versus $20 monthly

| Months used | Monthly payments | One-time payment | Lower amount paid |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 3 | $60 | $240 | Monthly by $180 |
| 6 | $120 | $240 | Monthly by $120 |
| 12 | $240 | $240 | Equal |
| 24 | $480 | $240 | One-time by $240 |

Hypothetical USD amounts, not live offers. Excludes taxes, fees and price changes; assumes identical access remains available throughout.

A lifetime offer has no known finite billing term to divide into a reliable annualized rate. Keep its upfront price visible and its annualized rate unassigned. You can calculate cost over a chosen personal-use horizon, but label that horizon explicitly. Dividing $240 by two years is your scenario, not the provider's $120 annual plan.

## Before committing the full amount

- Find the definition of lifetime and the exact service it applies to.
- Separate existing archive access from any promise of future updates.
- Check downloads, special formats and associated sites individually.
- Read account, device and termination conditions; ask about unclear material terms.
- Compare against realistic use rather than an unlimited horizon.
- Keep the dated offer, checkout total and confirmation so the purchased scope can be checked later.

## Prefer clarity over an impressive discount

The FTC's online-shopping guidance recommends checking the complete offer and retaining purchase records. Its subscription guidance explains that promotional terms and renewals deserve separate attention. Applied here, evaluate any attached trial independently of the one-time purchase. If future access, updates or an add-on's renewal terms cannot be confirmed, leave those benefits out of the comparison rather than pricing them as certain.
